Amidst a sea of SXSW indie rock, this year a substantial handful of dark, heavy rock bands lurk beneath the surface, ready to burst forth and destroy your ear drums. Here we’ve got a metalcore, deathcore, and melodic hardcore group. Hope you enjoy, and don’t forget your ear buds so your ears don’t bleed.

Horse the BandHorse The Band

Lake Forest, California

Label: Vagrant

Horse The Band sounds like heavy metal Nintendo music. The band is without a doubt one of the best gnarley bands to see playing the festival. The heart is metalcore and their touring roster shows the passion they have for playing shows. Heavy breakdowns with strange Nintendo electronics make this band a great live show.

Connecticut & NYC

Label: Victory

If you want to hear heavy chugs and strong raunchy screams go and check this band out — many people categorize them as ‘deathcore.’ The band has passion and fierce attitudes. They are currently attached with Victory Records and seem to fit right in with that roster of artists. RIYL: For The Fallen Dreams (Also playing SXSW).

Jacksonville Florida

Label: Metal Blade Records

Evergreen Terrace is a melodic hardcore band that’s been around since 1999. They are straightforward like Emmure, but with more hardcore structural ties. If you like to tear up the mosh pit come hang out with these dudes. Make sure to call out for their “Mad World” cover!
RIYL: Comeback Kid, Terror, and This Is Hell
Listen to: “Give em the Sleeper”
