SXSW is no stranger to the weird, wild, and wonderful. Here are some options for music that is pushing the boundaries, incorporating weird elements, and generally rocking to their own beat.

Atlanta, Georgia

Label: Favorite Gentlemen

The band has a knack for music marketing and a rogue DIY attitude, which has led them to this year’s SXSW. If you like the sounds of Thrice, Circa Survive, or Felix Culpa produce then this is a original take on a similar genre. Warbely vocals and aggressive guitar riffs, with some introspective, quieter moments scattered in between.

betta git yoself a gun.
Portugal The Man

Portland, Oregon

Label: Atlantic

Originally from the barren lands of Wasilla, Alaska but now located in Portland, Portgual The Man is an experimental progressive rock band with a unique sound that dozens of other bands are trying to replicate. Their live show normally consists of acid lights and groovy bass lines.

Man Man

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Label: Epitaph

If you want to really get down and see a weird and unusual prog band you can never go wrong with the Philadelphia natives Man Man. The band is really just a collaboration of noises, yelling, and some melody. All in all, a great collision of new wave sounds.
